Causes Of Anxiety Disorder

What Are The Underlying Causes Of Anxiety Disorder?

It is impossible to talk about the causes of anxiety disorders without first being clear about what we mean by the phrase ‘anxiety disorder’. For purposes of this article it refers to the following six types of generally accepted disorders that come under the broad umbrella of anxiety disorders: obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, social and specific phobias.

For a further breakdown and definition of these conditions please see the following link: what is anxiety disorder?

As you can see these conditions are quite wide ranging offering different symptoms and requiring different treatments. For this reason it is difficult to provide the exact causes of anxiety disorders. It is difficult to generalise for the entire population when each person is suffering their own specific condition and of course when  they think and act differently anyway.

That said, scientists have come to some agreement as to the general underlying causes of anxiety disorders and here they are in no particular order:

Genetics. Anxiety disorders have been clearly found to run in families. A variety of studies have now been conducted that essentially prove there is a genetic basis which predisposes certain people to these types of disorders.

Brain chemistry. A lot of the medicines that provide relief to anxiety disorder patients centre around altering the brain chemistry. It therefore seems to be logical that the level of certain chemicals in the brain plays a role in causing anxiety disorders.

Personality factors. It has become apparent to researchers that certain personality types appear to be more likely to develop anxiety disorders. Characteristics such as a low self-esteem and poor coping skills seem to contribute to the onset of an anxiety disorder.

Life experiences. Exposure to certain types of events, behaviour, people and places can have a massive impact on a person’s state of well being and it is believed that these may well trigger the onset of certain anxiety disorders. The types of experiences that would be on this list include: a natural disaster, serious accident, unexpected death of a loved one, terrorist incident, war, violent personal assault, or some other type of life-threatening event.

It may be one or more of the above factors that is the root cause of an anxiety disorder, however it should be comforting to know that many people worldwide suffer from anxiety disorders at some point in their lives, there are many effective treatments available and much further research is being done into the causes of anxiety disorders.
