How To Help With Panic Attacks

If you need help with panic attacks then you are in the right place.

Panic attack help is often not easy to get as few people know what they should actually do to help panic attacks subside. Panic attack sufferers seemingly have little control as to when and where their attacks may occur, thus making it even more important that the sufferer has a clear idea of what to do if they feel a panic attack coming on.

Here are nine useful pointers that summarise how to help with panic attacks for both a sufferer and friend/bystander of someone who does.

  1. Stay where you are. Moving around tends to make things worse as even small changes can cause the spiral of anxiety to increase further. Staying in the same place allows the process of coming to terms with the situation to occur much more quickly as there are more constants in the environment.
  2. Choose a focus. Select a target to focus on that is none threatening and predictable. The ticking hand on a clock a beautiful picture, a photo of family in your wallet or something similar are all suitable targets and help with panic attacks. Simultaneously remind yourself that any frightening thoughts or feelings are only temporary and will pass soon.
  3. Deep, slow steady breathing. If this list were written in order of importance then this would be number one. It quite probably provides the greatest help with panic attacks. Whilst it sounds easy to do, in the middle of a panic attack it can be really difficult. If you are with a friend at the time get them to count to three whilst you breathe in and out slowly and deeply.
  4. Dig deep and challenge your fear. This may sound a little too philosophical to help panic attacks but it really isn’t. If you can see through your fear whatever it is the panic will begin to subside. More often than not fear is just an illusion and that which you fear has little to no chance of coming to pass anyway and if it did…would the world really stop spinning!? Thinking through any fears you think you may experience at a destination you are visiting prior to going there is a great way to help with panic attacks.
  5. Visualise. Try to picture in your mind’s eye a place where you were once truly relaxed and happy. This might be a memory form an early childhood holiday. A quiet weekend earlier in the year when you were sat in the garden at home, a pleasant meal out with friends whatever you like but fix this image in your mind and feel the feelings as they were then. This can take a bit of practise at first and you needn’t wait to practise this during a panic attack. Try it for a few minutes each day and the when a panic attack occurs you can pull this out the bag!
  6. Do not resist the panic attack. Do not struggle against it. Remember the saying ‘what you resist persists’ and instead focus on letting go of the feelings that you are having and concentrate on better thoughts. Focussing on the symptoms you are experiencing will only bring more of the same which is not what you want at all.
  7. Make an effort to relax in your free time. Quit spending time worrying about when your next panic attack will occur and instead actually relax in your free time this will really help panic attacks from occurring in the first place as the lower stress levels will knock on into other areas of your life. Meditation, Pilates, yoga and other such complimentary therapies are said to really provide valuable panic attack help whilst increasing your sense of well being.
  8. No ‘how to help panic attacks’ list would be complete without this recommendation: Exercise! Exercise provides a great release from everyday stresses and strains, mental as well as physical. It can be anything you want, anything that makes you feel good. 30 minutes of exercise 5 times a week is the standard guideline for good health anyway so why not see this as an opportunity to start becoming healthier too.
  9. Caffeine, alcohol and smoking intake should be minimised as much as possible. None of these substances are helpful to the body and caffeine in particular can cause the body’s heart rate to increase which is the opposite to what you want. Try camomile tea for a refreshing relaxing drink instead.
